Apart from the launch of the Galaxy S20 Series at it’s Unpacked event, Samsung also launched the Galaxy Z Flip. The new foldable device from Samsung comes with a different design to the Galaxy Fold. It has a horizontal fold much like the Motorola Razr. However, unlike Motorola’s offering, the Galaxy Z Flip does pack in some flagship specifications. When unfolded, you’ll have access to a 6.7-inch OLED display that can be folded down to have a smaller footprint.
Samsung has done a terrible job this time around trying to keep things a secret. The company even revealed the Galaxy Z Flip a couple of days ago in an ad during the Oscars 2020. Therefore, we practically knew everything about the S20 lineup as well as the Galaxy Z Flip for a few weeks now. The latest foldable from Samsung has ditched an outer display for a small 1.1-inch OLED cover display. This tiny screen will allow you to see notifications. However, you cannot read any notification messages. Additionally, it can be used as a viewfinder if you choose to click selfies via the rear camera. Thanks to the foldable screen, you can easily pocket the phone or throw it into a handbag without having to worry about space.
Samsung Galaxy Z Flip specifications
As we mentioned above, the Z Flip does pack in some flagship specs albeit from the previous year. Nevertheless, these are the specifications of the foldable device.
- 6.7-inch, FHD+ Dynamic AMOLED foldable display.
- 1.1-inch, Super AMOLED Display (Cover Display).
- Qualcomm Snapdragon 855+ SoC.
- 8GB RAM + 256GB internal storage.
- Dual rear cameras: 12MP Ultra Wide Camera + 12MP Wide-angle Camera.
- 10MP, f/2.4 front-facing camera with an 80˚ field of view.
- 3300mAh battery.
Pitting the Galaxy Z Flip against its closest competitor which is the Motorola Razr makes for an easy win for the Z Flip. What’s even more important is the fact that the Galaxy Z Flip comes with an ultra-thin glass. The UTG or Ultra Thin Glass from Samsung is supposed to last up to 200,000 folds. This is a big step up from the plastic displays found on all other foldable devices available at present.
The device has a slightly taller than usual 21.9:9 aspect ratio. This may lead to black bars appearing while watching consuming certain content on it. Although, the tall aspect ratio will be an advantage to those who use apps such as Instagram or read a lot on their device.

Samsung has also improved the hinge mechanism on the Galaxy Z Flip. With the addition of the small fibers, the company claims it will help keep debris and pocket-lint from entering the hinge. Although, we may have to wait until more people get their hands on the device to see if the durability claim is true.
Pricing and availability
The Galaxy Z Flip will be available at a price of $1,380 in the US and to our surprise, there isn’t going to be any delay between the availability of the Galaxy Z Flip and the S20 Series. Interested buyers will be available to get their hands on the Galaxy Z Flip starting February 14th via Samsung’s official website or in select stores. The device will be available in three different color variants — Mirror Purple, Mirror Black, and Mirror Gold. However, the color variants will vary based on the region.
The company also launched the Galaxy Z Flip Thom Browne Edition. Of course, it looks classy and stunning. Needless to say, you may end up paying more than two grand to buy the Galaxy Z Flip Thom Browne Edition. Nevertheless, what are your thoughts on the Galaxy Z Flip?
