ZTE Nubia Red Magic 3
The super-duper slo-mo recording isn’t the only stand-out feature about the device. The camera is so powerful that ZTE had to put inside a cooling fan! If that’s not cool I don’t know what is. It may or may not be practical, the jury is still out on that, but it is definitely cool.
Design
The phone stands out even in terms of the design aesthetics and the choice of materials. At a time when almost all premium smartphones ship with a glass sandwich design, the Nubia Red Magic 3 has an aluminum body. The rear of the phone as some geometric designs like that of the Asus ROGUE phone, but not as good looking. The camera module also has a Superman-esque diamond shape. The fingerprint scanner on the back is also hexagonal in shape.
On the front, ZTE opts for a no-notch design which means it has bezels on both top and bottom. Not necessarily a bad choice if you’re not into notches. Despite the camera hardware being one of the most impressive aspects of the phone, the phone is being pitched as a gaming beast and you can tell that from the design.
For cooling, ZTE does away with the usual copper tube and instead boasts a liquid cooling tube, high conductivity copper foil, multi-layer graphene, and a powerful internal fan. All this the company claims results in 5 times more cooling.
Specs
The device features a 6.65-inch 90Hz display with a resolution of 1080 pixels by 2340 pixels at an aspect ratio of 19.5:9. There are around 388 pixels per inch of the display and it all amounts up to a screen-to-body ratio of 80.5% which is not quite impressive but not bad either. It’s an AMOLED capacitive touchscreen capable of producing 16 million colors.
It’s a flagship phone from ZTE so it will obviously have a top of the line processor. Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 is packed inside the device with Adreno 640 GPU. There is at least 6GB of RAM to help the processor out with 64GB internal storage. Other variants with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage and 12GB of RAM with 256GB of internal storage are also available. There’s no microSD slot for obvious reasons.
ZTE has left no stones unturned in packing top-notch hardware in this no-notch smartphone. The battery itself is a huge 5000mAh Li-Po cell which is probably a first for a flagship device. It is non-removable (surprise surprise) but it does support fast charging at 27W.
Camera
Onto the most impressive parts of the phone, the camera. It’s a single camera on the back which is again a break from the trend, much the Google Pixel. It’s a 48 MP, f/1.7, 26mm wide-angle Sony IMX586 sensor with PDAF support. We’ve already mentioned what it can do with videos. It can record videos with a resolution of 4320p at 30 fps, 2160p at either 30fps or 1920 fps.
The selfie camera on the front is a 16MP, f/2.0 shooter with HDR support. It can record video up to 1080p at 30fps. Moreover, images benefit from Nubia’s ‘NeoVision photography engine’, which is a bit like the ‘Pixel Visual Core’ on Google Pixel 3. Along with it are software assists such as AI noise reduction and AI beauty self-timer for those perfectly posed selfies.
